What goes under
the singlet

The rule

NFHS Rule 4-1-1a: a sports bra is required for female wrestlers, and it must fully cover the breasts and minimize the risk of exposure. A compression shirt under a one piece singlet is permitted, and required only if it is needed for full coverage.

The NFHS officials' guide for girls wrestling is also unusually direct about the singlet itself:

Boys singlets are not designed for female wrestlers. Girls' cut singlets are the optimal choice for NFHS wrestling.

If your program issues boys' cut singlets to the girls' team, that sentence is the one to bring to your athletic director. It is the governing body's own language.

The sports bra

Three constraints, and they are all mechanical rather than aesthetic:

• No zippers, clasps, or exposed metal. They scratch, they catch on singlet fabric, and an official can flag them on sight.
• High cut stays put. A low cut bra under a singlet migrates during scrambles, which is the exact thing the rule is written to prevent.
• Compression over encapsulation. A bra that flattens and holds beats one built with structured cups, because there is nothing structured about being folded in half.

There is a small wrestling specific market worth knowing about. BUSTZ was founded by a wrestler and sizes XS to XL across A to FF cups, which is a range most athletic brands simply do not serve. Cliff Keen makes a wrestling sports bra designed alongside its singlets, and states it builds a female counterpart for every pattern it makes.

A general high impact sports bra works too, as long as it clears the three constraints above. Seamless racerback styles are the usual default because there is no hardware anywhere on them.

Underwear, which nobody writes about

Standard cut women's underwear bunches under a singlet. It rides, it shows, and you will spend the match aware of it. This is close to universal and almost never mentioned in gear guides.

What works instead: boys' boxer briefs, or a purpose made athletic brief with a flat waistband and no seams across the seat. Compression shorts also solve it and do double duty if you are wrestling on your period.

The compression layer

Optional under a one piece unless you need it for coverage. Some wrestlers layer a full two piece compression set under the singlet on top of the sports bra, which adds a little heat but removes any question of anything shifting.

If you go this route, buy compression that is actually compression. Loose athletic fabric under a singlet bunches worse than nothing.

The two piece uniform is a real option

Under NFHS Rule 4-1-1 you can skip the one piece entirely. The legal two piece is:

• Compression shorts or wrestling shorts, minimum four inch inseam, not extending below the knee
• A form fitted compression shirt, not extending below the elbow, with a minimum three inch tail

This is not a special accommodation you have to ask permission for. It is in the rule book, available to every wrestler, and Cliff Keen among others sells the two pieces as a matched set.

It is worth saying plainly why this matters. Ill fitting singlets are a performance problem, not a vanity one. An athlete adjusting her straps between periods and thinking about what might shift is not thinking about her opponent. If the two piece removes that, it is worth more than whatever your teammates think of it.

Before your first meet

• Sports bra with no hardware, high cut, already worn in practice
• Boxer briefs or athletic briefs, not everyday underwear
• Compression shorts, useful as a backup layer either way
• A spare singlet in the bag
• Clear deodorant, because white marks show on a light singlet

Wear the whole combination in a live practice before you wear it at a tournament. Everything on this list behaves differently once someone is actually pulling on it.
